about

'Self Doubt' was born from Charlie Gradon's unwavering commitment to writing and recording his own music. After years of learning, mixing, and recording in his bedroom studio, Gradon has emerged with a body of work which is, in every way, himself.
However it also came about in an unorthodox way. Gradon recounts employing his friend and band mate in 'Turtle Skull' Dan Frizza to come to his home studio and record him and his songs.
'We recorded about 12 songs, and we were to mix it at Dan's studio in coogee, but it felt very strange not having the sessions on my laptop to tinker with, so i started making another record in secret at home.'
'I felt like i was cheating on Dan and the other record, but i couldn't help myself.'
Unsure whether they were just demos, or something more he showed his friend and photographer Matt Toon the songs.
'Matt has the best taste in music of anyone i know, so when he came back and said he loved it and that he was keen to help get it out there, a switch went off in my head and i knew that it was an actual album and not just demos.' Charlie said.
The lyrical content is ernest, honest, and deeply personal. The opening track 'Double Rainbow' was written and recorded at midnight, after Gradon received a 1400 dollar fine for forgetting to sort out all the complicated parts of his rego.

'It put me in a state, where the chaos of my day to day life was too much and i longed for the structure of a 9-5'. Charlie recalls.

The title Track sums up the complex make up of Gradon's relationship with his craft. Consumed by it, yet riddled by it.
'I'm constantly bouncing out mixes and over listening, which leads to this toxic love/hate relationship. I was listening to a lot of Radiohead at the time and i think it shows, its probably my favourite bass line on the record.'

'Smart Humans', feels like a day in the life. Zooming in and out of profound social commentary, to recalling a near death experience falling off a balcony on NYE.
'Going Nowhere' brings elements of Gradon's Psych rock past into his solo endeavours, proving himself as not only prolific songwriter but a proficient guitarist with a swirly fuzzy jam section.
'Boys vs Girls' was written in a time when Gradon's partner was touring the country in her band 'Rackett'.
'I was in a dark chaotic place, when she left i would lose myself in the studio for hours, i was passing out on the floor with my headphones on, but probably the best snare sound on the record.'

'Truth Comes Out' brings Gradon home to his folk songwriter roots. Pairing laid back grooves, and jangly acoustic guitars, before bringing things right down with the closing track 'I Will Let Go'.
'The last tune is the feminine version of an old blues rock song i used to play called Homeless Country. It's an old song, but somehow the most mature. It reminds me to move forward.'

The album leaves the listener, wishing for more. It's almost cruel how quickly you wind up back at the start of the Rainbow, and before you know it you are willing to let go and listen all the way through again.
